The Boston Police Foundation is proud to partner with the Boston Police Department in creating the first Memorial Wall for Officers who have died by suicide. It has been a long time coming that these Officers and their families have been given the proper honor and respect. The physical and mental tolls of policing have been evident for years, but it is not until recently that they have been brought to light. In a recent study by the Ruderman Foundation has revealed that more Officers die by suicide than in the line of duty. This staggering statistic reveals the major mental health crisis that our officers face.
The memorial, which is located at the Boston Police Department headquarters, highlights 13 badges, representing 13 Boston police officers who have taken their own lives in the last 25 years. The memorial also depicts A separate square inscribed with the words “may there never be another.” This memorial is also the very first in the national recognizing, remembering and honoring Police Officers who have died by suicide.
We have two primary goals for this memorial. The first is to honor and remember the brave Men and Women of the Boston Police Department who have tragically taken their own lives due, in part to the trials and tribulations of the job. Secondly, to raise awareness to these issues in hopes that Officers seek treatment when needed, resulting in us not needing to add another badge to the memorial in the future.
Our mission is to provide the funding and resources to allow every Boston Police Officer the ability to be physically and mentally fit in order to best serve their communities throughout the City of Boston. We will continue to raise money and awareness to provide these important resources and help not only the Boston Police Officers but all of the residents of Boston.
